Lived here for a few years and really enjoyed it. Our unit had a few occasional issues but maintenance was always there same day and very helpful. The trail and pool access is also so nice! Definitely my favorite apartment I’ve lived at in the 8 years I’ve been in Austin! Even received an email / reminder months later letting me know my deposit check they gave me was never cashed out. Thought that was really nice. :)
I lived here for 2 years. Price was good for the location and amenities. Pool is awesome. Staff is friendly and gets maintenance done within a day or two. Great experience.
The only trouble I had was after I moved out. I was charged an extra $116 for repairs to my apartment after move out, which I understood because it did need drywall repair. The apartments immediately sent me to collections, then sent me the bill for $116. I paid the bill 2 days after receipt (4 days after move out). I found out when my credit was ran trying to move into my new place that I had a collection posted on my credit report, which dropped my score by 40 points. I had to speak to 8 different people at the retreat to get them to remove it because everyone kept saying it wasn't their department. They did finally remove it, but it took about 2 weeks and should have not hit my credit in the first place. I do appreciate that they actually did something to fix the problem though, as most apartments would have not even bothered to fix their mistake.
Moved to Austin right out of college and have really enjoyed my experience so far. People are friendly, maintenance is quick, apartment is spacious. I got the partially renovated unit, which is fine it's a bit outdated but the location by far makes up for it. 10 minutes from downtown and is walking distance from stores, gyms, restaurants if needed. The pool is awesome, wish the hot tub was hot especially with the change in weather. The gym is a 5/10 it gets the job done but it could be better.
Honestly, my complaints are small and I would give it a 5 if it was a little less expensive but overall a great place to live glad I found it, I would recommend to anyone.
As far as the homeless go, I have not had any interactions I can speak of. I just would obviously not leave anything in your car.
This is a great place to live for many reasons but above all, Amy and Denise from the management team are dedicated to helping their residents however they can, they also run super fun experiences for residents to participate in! Their patience and care for the resident experience is what sets this place apart, plus the amazing maintenance staff being timely and thorough.
Austin rent is crazy high so being able to live so close to downtown at this price and quality is next to none. Thank you The Retreat at Barton Creek for providing a great home!!
I lived here for 2 years and just moved because I wanted something nicer and bigger. The location and pool are great, but everything else was average. When I toured, the unit I selected wasn’t available yet so they just showed me the model unit. They did not tell me that the model was fully renovated and the unit I selected was only partially renovated. My apartment ended up being very dark and dingy with limited natural light. There were various electrical problems with the unit when I moved in, but maintenance was able to fix them eventually.
My biggest gripe was that they continued to increase my rent during the renewal period, but my unit was then posted for $300 cheaper after I gave my notice. Management is difficult to deal with and does not care about their current residents.
They are also not forthcoming with incidents or issues that happen in the complex. I was once woken in the middle of the night to police in the parking lot talking on a bullhorn and was never told about what happened. This made me feel unsafe. Other apartments I’ve lived at regularly send residents emails about these kinds of incidents.
Recently moved back to the retreat after a year stint away.
Very happy to be back, very nice property, pool amenities are nice, maintenance & management are friendly.
Laney was my leasing agent and did a great job, I’m a very busy individual so it’s nice to know I was in competent hands as she helped me through the process.
DO NOT LIVE HERE! This apartment complex has to be the worst in Austin. First off, I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment where my bedroom would flood every time it rained. I'd have to use my bath towels to try and soak up the water until maintenance would come (2-3 days later). They told me they didn't know where the water came from (because I had already cleaned it up and it had been days). It took them ~ 3 months to come out and "try" to solve it. Every other day I had to go to the leasing office to try and get them to do something about it. No matter what, nothing was fixed. 4 months later they put us in a new unit in the back of the complex with the homeless.
Homeless camps are right behind our building and you can see them, hear them argue, and their dogs bark all night long.
Unfortunately, they "can't" do anything about it. Cars getting broken into often and the homeless will knock on your doors.
Also, do not sign up for covered parking. They make you pay this $50/month fee until the end of your lease, although you don't sign any paperwork to get the spot (they don´t tell you this). I'm no longer in need of the spot since I bought a house, but they're forcing me to pay the fee as they automatically tacked it onto my lease.
You also have to pay for trash pick-up, even if you don't use it, which is terrible. I'm a 45sec walk from the dumpster and take it myself, but still have to pay the fee. They should get with the times and only have people pay who are using the service.
Another drawback is when paying your rent online (app), you have to pay a fee (you're paying the apartment's fee for them to have the app).
Please avoid this place at all costs. The rent may look good, but this place is disgusting. If you do sign, your rent will go up ~$500 each renewal. Your appliances will constantly break and the water gets turned off at least 2x/month. People had to go to the Gold's Gym and LA Fitness close by to shower because they said someone hit the main water line.
Also, should you end your lease, they charge you $250 to not renew. If you find a roommate to replace your unit, you’ll be charged $500.
Finally, they do take your entire security deposit to pocket, even if your apartment is in good shape. There’s a reason why they haven’t responded to this post, but everyone else’s - because it’s all true!
You've been warned!
I moved into the complex in 2020. After the freeze in 2021, my apartment flooded every time it rained. I had to take videos for months for them to do anything. Finally, they agreed to move me to another apartment. Now, I am about 25 feet away from a massive homeless camp. The homeless people have tried to barge into people's apartments, they have used the pool for cleansing purposes. It continues to get larger every day. I have had many incidents with the homeless and feel unsafe and threatened. I was told by their attorney that I wasn't vocal enough to cancel my lease. So I am happy to share my experience. I am uploading videos of the camp and any incidents on YouTube. Google Homeless The Retreat, or any variation.
